Personal Reflections on some of the sayings of Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas.

A note from QUG
We welcome contributions to our website which have a Universalist content, and include this text, first published by the Friends Fellowship of Healing in 2000, by Mavis E Timms. But the manuscripts found at Nag Hammadi did not make up a gospel, nor were they written by Thomas. If Thomas had gone to India, as some traditions suggest, he would not have known of this text. The fragments date from about 200 CE, and the more complete Coptic version from 340 CE.
The so called ‘Gospel of Thomas’ is a collection of ‘sayings’ and contains no reference to Jesus’ crucifixion or the empty tomb; it is therefore not considered a ‘gospel’ in the sense of the four included in the New Testament canon. The Jesus of this text is not the Jewish messiah seen in the New Testament but, as Mavis writes, he is ‘the universal Way that leads to the healing of body, mind and spirit, creating unity within our own being, and unity with the Cosmos’.
